Cherry Seed Germination

In June of 2023, I was visiting my family. There was a wonderful cherry tree in the back yard and everyone was enjoying picking the cherries and eating them.

Jodie being Jodie: I ate some of the cherries and put three of the cherry pits in my pocket for later.

As a complete tangent, I was once accused of putting a lump of gravy in my pocket. I did no such thing.

I promptly forgot about the cherry pits.

I found them a year later while I was tidying my bedside table and decided that I wanted to learn how to grow them.

What kind of cherries were these? I don’t exactly know, other than they are cold-hardy, and could be a type of sour cherry that has been bred for the prairies.

I (agonizingly) cracked open the cherry pits with some help.

Cold Stratification#

I moistened a paper towel, wrapped it around the seeds, and then wrapped that package in tin foil before folding it into a plastic snack bag.

I placed this neat package in the fridge. I probably should have written a date on the snack bag, but I didn’t.

10 Weeks Later…#

Annnd, it failed. Likely because I let the cherry pits dry out. I’ll have to revisit this experiment.
