T-Shirts and Zazzle

Newt Shirt

His name is Tiny

Where have the past four years gone? I’m almost a Visual Communications Design graduate. It’s a little scary, but exhilarating at the same time. Oh ACAD, just what are you about to let loose into the world? Haha.

As one of my final projects, I designed three individual T-Shirts based upon reptiles and amphibians (and horrible, horrible puns). Then I took my favourite one (the newt!), and with the help of Aron, we used Avery Stretchable Fabric Transfers and put it onto a thin white sweater. The trick is just to iron evenly and pull up the transfer paper slowly after it’s cooled completely — if part of the design comes up with the transfer paper, just put it back down and re-iron it (it’s likely that you didn’t iron it well enough). The shirt I used was a blend of 57% cotton, 38% polyester, & 5% spandex. I have a hunch that the newer the fabric is, the better it’ll work as well.

The final result is as pictured. It actually transferred a lot better than I had anticipated, which was awesome, as I now have a newt shirt. :)

The iron-on transfer was a very quick solution to putting my image on a shirt. I wanted to have it as quickly as possible in order to wear it to my critique.  As a more long-term solution, with more quality printing, I’ve put a few of my designs in my Zazzle store…  so you know, if you’re looking to add something a little more odd to your wardrobe… Just this morning I noticed that my Reptile Dysfunction shirt had won a Today’s Best Award at Zazzle, which is pretty cool. I’m not entirely sure how they’re chosen, but because of it, it was featured on the front page for the entire day which was neat. I feel like doing a few more critter designs once I get some free time.

Anyway, the college year is very quickly coming to a close. At the moment I’m working on putting my graduation portfolio together (aiming to have a PDF downloadable version as well), finishing up assignments, and generally just keeping my head up above the water. Roughly 5 projects to wrap up over the next two weeks, which is plenty of time. Then of course there’s the job/career hunt. I’m sure I’ll find something eventually that will suit my skills. :) If  you know someone that is looking for, oh, I don’t know, a slightly odd person with a background in design, web development, illustration, and an interest in goofy games, send them my way.

Random fun fact: I’ve been playing Neopets since January 10th, 2000.
